Wilmington Sharks baseball

When we were given free tickets to the Wilmington Sharks game a couple weeks ago, we jumped at the chance.  It would be our 3-year-old daughter's first baseball game and although my husband and I have been to many baseball games in our lives, this was our first Sharks game.

My daughter enjoying her first baseball game.

The Sharks are part of the Coastal Plain League, a collegiate summer league with 14 teams in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.  They play at the Legion Sports Complex, 2149 Carolina Beach Rd.  There is ample, free parking in the parking lot.

Once you pass through the ticket gate, there is a snack bar on the left with some decent food options, a Rita's Italian Ice booth, and The Cheesy Banker food truck is on hand serving up some delicious creations.  They have a small souvenir stand with some Sharks gear, and a bouncy house to get out some pregame energy.  The bathrooms are a good size and quite clean.

The game was great (they beat Florence 3-1) and entertaining from start to finish. There was music in between plays and the mascot, Sharky, was a hit with the kids.  He throws little souvenirs out, like t-shirts and soft, squishy baseballs.

With Sharky.  She was excited, but distracted.

In short, Sharks games are fun for anyone - kids, families, teenagers, and adults.  Get out there and support up-and-coming college ballplayers!

Catch tonight's last regular season game at 7:00pm against the Thomasville Hitoms.  The Sharks are in the playoffs, which begin August 4.

Tickets are reasonably priced, ranging from free (general admission for kids 5 and under) to $8 for adult reserved seats.  You can have parties there, too - birthday or otherwise - and it looked like they have box seats for special groups.  For more information, visit wilmingtonsharks.com or call 910-343-5621.

Inaugural post: Mayfaire Town Center

Hey all!

Welcome to my blog.  When my family and I first moved to Wilmington last June, we had visited a few times but weren't too familiar with the area.  I've spent a lot of time online looking for restaurants, historical sites, kid-friendly places, and all kinds of events.  There are a lot of them!  I don't see how anyone could ever be bored in this part of the state - especially being on the coast and having access to the beaches and pretty decent weather throughout the year.

I never really considered doing a blog before but thought it might be helpful to someone new to the area, like me, or people visiting.  And maybe reintroduce things to people who have lived here for years.  I spent most of my life in Erie, PA and I was still discovering places I'd never heard of, or at least had never been to.  So, I hope I can pick some interesting places to talk about and if anyone has any suggestions for places, please email me!

The first place I chose is Mayfaire Town Center.  Hardly an unheard-of hole-in-the-wall, but it's one of my favorite places to go.  When we first moved here, we were in walking distance and would walk there several times a week.  Sometimes to shop or see a movie, sometimes just to walk around and throw pennies in the fountain.  It's a beautiful, clean conglomeration of restaurants, retail shops, grocery stores, housing, and a movie theater.  They have different events throughout the year, such as their summer concerts on Friday evenings, and different stores have their own events too.  Mayfaire 16, the Regal Cinema theater, offers $1 family and kids' movies twice a week during the summer.  Barnes & Noble and Brilliant Sky Toys & Books both offer weekly story times.

The clothing shops range all ages and sizes and both genders - from Justice and J. Crew to Catherine's and Men's Warehouse.  Restaurants range from quick and light to full sit-down meals.  One of my favorites, Zoe's Kitchen, serves fresh, healthy sandwiches and entrees, including vegetarian and vegan options.  Besides bookstores, a trip to Mayfaire can also include video games (GameStop), electronics (hhgregg), craft supplies (Michaels), and home decor (Pier 1 and Pottery Barn).  There really are too many places for me to list.

Mayfaire Town Center is located on Military Cutoff Road, between Eastwood and Market.  Their general hours are Mon-Sat 10am-9pm and Sun noon-6pm, but some stores and restaurants have different hours.  Take a few hours and check it out... even if you've been there before, you might discover something new - like Which Wich, a new sandwich shop.
